49 missing as boat overturns in seas off Thailand: Governor

PHUKET, THAILAND: A ship sporting dozens of Chinese vacationers overturned on Thursday afternoon in rough seas off southern Thailand and 49 passengers have been unaccounted for, a local governor said. Strong winds have been still blowing as searchers appeared for the lacking off the tourist island of Phuket in the Andaman Sea.

Phuket governor Norraphat Plodthong said 48 passengers have been rescued from the boat, with 49 unaccounted for.

A police legitimate had previous said 90 other folks have been rescued from the boat and just seven have been lacking. The reason for the discrepancy was no longer clear.

A second boat also overturned at another location off Phuket on Thursday afternoon. But officers said the 39 Chinese and European vacationers pressured to abandon that boat have been rescued and feature returned to land.

Thai media showed footage of other folks rescued from one of the boats in massive rubber life rafts at sea, with fishing boats and churning water in the background. They also showed survivors being lifted from the rafts and sitting of their life jackets amid ropes on the deck of what appears to be a fishing trawler.


Phuket officers had previous issued a warning of severe climate until subsequent Tuesday, together with heavy rain and winds.


"All agencies are co-operating in their search at this time," Norraphat said. "We have given warnings ... but the winds are strong."


He said officers would consider whether or not to ban boats from going to sea right through strong winds.
