900 cartons of illicit liquor recovered

LUDHIANA: Police recovered 900 cartons of illicit liquor in two separate circumstances on Thursday.

In the primary case, the anti-narcotics cell seized 610 cartons of illicit liquor from a truck close to Transport Nagar on Ludhiana-Delhi freeway. “When we signalled the truck to forestall, its motive force and two other occupants fled, leaving the vehicle at the spot. Documents recovered from the truck helped us identify two of them — motive force Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Mohalla New Amar Nagar, and his helper Sanjiv Kumar of Lohara. It is but to be ascertained from where they had been bringing the consignment and who was their associate,” stated anti-narcotics cell in-charge inspector Surinder Pal Singh.

Hours later, Ludhiana police Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) impounded a mini-truck loaded with 290 cartons of illicit liquor at Sua Road, close to Chhoti Jawaddi. “The truck motive force was promoting the liquor to addicts on less expensive rates. On seeing the police, they all escaped,” stated CIA assistant sub-inspector Lakhbir Singh.

Later, the police arrested the truck motive force, Mehar Singh of Lohara, and two of his accomplices. He had brought the consignment from Chandigarh, the assistant sub-inspector added.

Cases had been registered.
