BENGALURU: “I’ve heard that Alia Bhatt is a movie heroine but have by no means noticed her. But for us, she is the sunshine of our lives,” says Akmal, whose hut in Kikkeri village in Okay R Pet taluk of Mandya district used to be on Friday lit up after dusk for the first time in the 25 years since he and his family had been living there.
Akmal’s hut is among the 40 homes that have been supplied solar lamps below Bollywood famous person Alia Bhatt’s philanthropic initiative ‘Mi Wardrobe is Su Wardrobe’. The citizens built the huts near APMC Yard towards Mysuru Road, and moved in two-and-a-half decades ago.
Sharing his pleasure, Akmal told TOI, “I need to thank Alia. Despite several petitions to the authorities to offer electricity, none cared about us. There have been just assurances and nothing became fact these kinds of years. On Friday, when folks got here to put in those solar lighting, we have been amazed.”
Nearly 200 folks living in the 40 huts are seeing their homes lit up for the first time. Under ‘Mi Wardrobe is Su Wardrobe’, enthusiasts may buy handpicked favourites from Alia’s cloth cabinet, and the cash raised used to be used to light up the Kikkeri huts.
Alia donated the cash to a Bengaluru-based NGO, which worked on the logistics of implementing the undertaking. Plastic bottles have been recycled to fabricate solar lamps.
Zarina Begum, 45, says she has never had dinner after 6.30pm. “Now I can have it even after 8pm. I don’t know who Alia Bhatt is, but I unquestionably need her to come here as soon as and see how she has benefited us. Now, our children can find out about at house, which they couldn’t do these kinds of years.”
