BHUBANESWAR: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday took inventory of the preparations for the July 14 Rath Yatra in Puri amid protests from Congress supporters and participants of Jagannath Sena, a voluntary organisation, over the loss of keys to the interior chambers of Ratna Bhandar and false charges of misconduct against servitors right through the seek advice from of President Ram Nath Kovind and his wife Savita to the shrine on March 18.
Naveen's assembly lasted for approximately 25 minutes amid tight security within the conference hall of Gopabandhu Aryurveda College in Puri. Several bureaucrats, IPS officers and ministers accompanied Naveen to Puri to supervise preparations for the annual chariot competition.
"I reviewed the Rath Yatra arrangements. By the Lord's blessings, everything will go well and safely," Naveen told the media. Earlier, some Congress supporters raised anti-Naveen slogans and waved black flags at Chakratirtha Road in Puri when the manager minister's convoy was once headed to the assembly venue. One of the protesters allegedly hurled tomatoes at the cavalcade. However, they did not hit any person, assets said.
Police detained around 45 protesters and launched them after Naveen left Puri. Members of Jagannath Sena too staged demonstration a few hundred metres clear of the assembly venue. Police took them into preventive custody and allow them to off afterwards.
Despite a boycott name given through Sri Jagannath Sevayat Sammilani, an affiliation of servitors of Jagannath temple, a variety of monks grew to become up for Naveen's assembly. The Sammilani had appealed to its colleagues to refrain from attending the assembly in protest against the Puri district management's faux allegation that the servitors had misbehaved with President Kovind and his wife. The servitors, who attended the assembly, handed over a memorandum to Naveen and suggested him to consider their welfare.
"I received the memorandum from the servitors. I will look into their demands. Servitors play vital roles in the temple. Their cooperation is essential for smooth conduct of Rath Yatra," Naveen said.
However, given the controversies surrounding the temple, it would be a trying out time for the government to ensure a clean Rath Yatra. Resentment is also brewing some of the servitors following Supreme Court's ban on accumulating dakshina from devotees and the proposal to permit folks of all non secular beliefs into the shrine.
In the assembly, director common of police R P Sharma reviewed the protection preparations. Sharma sought higher coordination between other state and central forces for clean conduct of the chariot competition. Like previous years, it's been made up our minds to declare Puri the city and its periphery as "no flying zone" right through the competition. A team of national security guard (NSG) is prone to camp in Puri to avoid any untoward incidents.
