Gold worth Rs 43L seized from Chennai airport

CHENNAI: Customs sleuths seized on Thursday seized 1.4kg gold worth Rs 43 lakh from two passengers in separate instances and busted an try to smuggle Saudi currency Riyal worth Rs 13.7 to Colombo.
On Thursday, 12 cylindrical shaped gold ingots of 24 Karat purity weighing 1190 grams valued at Rs 36 lakhs concealed within the cells of the laptop batteries have been seized from a passenger who arrived from Kuala Lumpur in a Batik Air flight.


Sheik Abdulllah Jahhupar Sathik (24) from Pudukkottai was intercepted at the exit of the arrival hall underneath suspicion that he might have concealed gold or contraband inside of his luggage.


The gold was seized from his checked-in bag. He has been arrested.


Earlier on on Wednesday, a U-shaped gold rod of 24 Karat purity weighing 225 grams worth around Rs 7 lakhs concealed within the laptop was seized from a passenger who arrived from Doha in an IndiGo flight. Amribunul Aas, 35, from Ramanathapuram was arrested.


In another case, Saudi Arabian Riyal to the tune of Rs 13.7 lakh was seized from two passengers Yasar Arafath, 37, and Mohamed Mussammil, 24, from Ramanathapuram who have been heading to Colombo via a SpiceJet flight. They had concealed the contraband in their rectum.
