CHIANG RAI: Rescue groups thrashed via dense wooded area masses of metres above a cave complex on Friday, on the lookout for an alternative method to extract 12 boys and their football trainer trapped inside for just about two weeks.
Their paintings above the Tham Luang cave close to Thailand's northern border with Myanmar took on added urgency as forecasts for rain threatened a plan to bring the men again via cramped, water-logged passageways to the cave front.
"We want to find the way down. I believe we are close," Thanes Weerasiri, president of the Engineering Institute of Thailand, instructed Reuters at a makeshift camp for volunteers and media close to the cave.
Helicopters buzzed overhead prior to flying to the dense blanket of inexperienced hills above the cave to assist search for an alternative extraction direction.
Rescue efforts since British divers found the staff on Monday have eager about draining the flooded cave and teaching the men - a few of whom are as younger as 11 and not competent swimmers - to attempt dives that may problem professional cavers.
The death of a former Thai Navy SEAL working in the flooded cave on Friday has shaken the rescue challenge, and forecasts for extra rain may undermine the draining of the cave, forcing officers to believe different options.
Thanes' engineers are working with the military to explore an area they consider to be the again finish of the cave, chiselling away fragile limestone rocks that he said could be just masses of metres from where the men are trapped.
"Originally we were exploring it as a way to bring supplies to the children from the back end of the cave, but now it could become more," said Thanes.
Chalongchai Chaiyakum, a senior Thai army officer, said that one staff travelled some 300 metres down a shaft on the hill on Thursday until they reached a useless finish.
He said that up to 200 persons are exploring the hill to take a look at to find a workable shaft.
MUSK OFFERS HELP
The muddy financial institution where the men are stranded is a few four km (2.five miles) from the entrance front of the cave, with sections of the overall 1.7-km stretch completely underwater.
Drilling down raises considerations that portions of the cave may cave in on the boys. Efforts to widen diving channels, have raised similar fears about blockading narrow passageways and hemming the staff in.
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk tweeted on Friday that engineers from his corporations - SpaceX and The Boring Company - had been heading to Thailand to look if they might lend a hand the rescue.
The corporations have "advance ground penetrating radar" that is "pretty good at digging holes" or era that might "create an air tunnel underwater" for the children to traverse, Musk said previous.
The Thai government said Musk's staff may assist the rescue operation with location tracking, water pumping or battery energy.
Relatives of the men, a few of whom have camped on the site for weeks, say all they would like is the safest go out for their youngsters.
"I'm worried...he has never dived," said Somboon Kaewwongwan, the daddy of a 16-year-old boy trapped in the cave.
