Women Kannada writers not given their due: Shanta

Dharwad: Leading ladies writers rued that in spite of a number of ladies contributing immensely to Kannada literature, they weren't being given due popularity and rewards.
Speaking at a session on ‘Contribution of women writers from North Karnataka to Kannada literature’ on the Dharwad district Kannada Sahitya Sammelana here on Saturday, Shanta Imrapur stated many ladies writers had written poems, vachanas, novels, brief stories, plays and travelogues which might be of high quality however, they've not been accorded due popularity.

“It was in 1918 when Da Ra Bendre wrote 'Tutturi' which had a social and philosophical message to the society and this cleared the path for the upward thrust of modern Kannada literature. However, 10 years prior to this, Santubai Neelgar had authored an 80-page ebook on ladies sensitization. Unfortunately, this has not been documented nor identified. The need of the hour is to unearth the contribution of women writers and record them,” she stated.

Another writer Vinaya Vakkund stated that within the 18th and 19th centuries, there have been no discussions on concerns of women in Karntaka and other portions of the country. This ended in the overlook of women’s concerns. “However, crusing past all odds, famous ladies writers Shailaja Udachan, Shashikala Veerayyaswamy and Shantadevi Malwad among others aired their concerns via poetry,” Vinaya stated.


Recalling that many ladies saints in 12th century had penned vachanas in Kannada to send around the message of harmony, peace, team spirit and integrity, Vinaya stated there's a wish to give due position to these writers within the historical past of Kannada literature.


Veena Sankangoudar stated the query to be responded is whether or not ladies have got equal status and their literature has found a definite position within the literary circle. Young ladies writers should attempt to broaden their own taste and convey useful literature, she added.
