NEW DELHI: Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday defended his hug with Pakistan army leader General Bajwa and sought to minimize the talk over him being seated subsequent to the PoK president right through the oath-taking rite of Pakistan PM Imran Khan.
"If someone (Pakistan army chief) comes to me and says that we belong to the same culture and we will open Kartarpur border on Guru Nanak Dev's 550th Prakash Parv, what else I could do?," the Congress leader mentioned after returning to India by the use of the Attari-Wagah border.
The Congress leader, who had gone to Pakistan on Friday, courted controversy when he was pictured hugging the Pakistan army leader in a while before the beginning of rite.
Commenting at the controversy of his seat placement right through the oath-taking of Imran Khan, the place he was sitting subsequent to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir president Masood Khan, the Punjab minister mentioned he was a visitor of honour and he sat the place he was requested to. "If you're invited as a guest of honour somewhere, you sit wherever you are asked to. I was sitting somewhere else but they asked me to sit there," he mentioned.
Reacting to Sidhu's trip to Pakistan to wait the swearing-in ceremoney of Imran Khan, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh mentioned that he had gone there in his private capability and that it had nothing to do with the Congress. "As far as attending the swearing-in ceremony is concerned, he went there in his personal capacity, so it has nothing to do with us. About him being seated next to the PoK president, maybe he (Sidhu) didn't know who he was."
But Singh additionally mentioned that he was not in favour of Sidhu appearing affection in opposition to the Pakistan army leader. "As far as hugging the Pakistan army chief is concerned, I am not in its favour. It was wrong of him to have shown the affection towards the Pakistan army chief," the Punjab CM mentioned.
Yesterday, the BJP hit out at the Sidhu for hugging Pakistan army leader at the swearing-in rite and requested Congress leader Rahul Gandhi if he would droop Sidhu for his "deplorable act".
