Vajpayee's ashes immersed in Ganga at Haridwar

NEW DELHI: The ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee immersed in Ganga river at Har-ki-Pauri in Haridwar on Sunday.

Vajpayee's daughter Namita Bhattacharya and granddaughter Niharika had earlier accrued 3 urns of the ashes from Smriti Sthal in New Delhi. The ashes have been taken by highway to Prem Ashram earlier than it arrived in Har-ki-Pauri for immersion.

Earlier within the day, home minister Rajnath Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah, Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath took section in 'Asthi Kalash Yatra' of Vajpayee.



After Haridwar, the former PM's ashes can also be immersed in all the holy rivers of Uttar Pradesh, together with Ganga, Yamuna and Tapti, to recognize his grand stature.

Adityanath had earlier mentioned that Uttar Pradesh is the past due BJP stalwart's place of business and by immersing his ashes in all the rivers across the state, people will get an opportunity to be a part of his ultimate rites.


Vajpayee, the 10th high minister of India, breathed his ultimate on Thursday night. He used to be cremated on Friday with complete state honour at Smriti Sthal within the nationwide capital.


The former Prime Minister, whose ancestral home is at Bateshwar in Agra, died on the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) following a prolonged illness. He used to be 93.
