Virat Kohli scores maiden Test century in England

NEW DELHI: Indian skipper Virat Kohli led his team from the front by way of scoring a maiden Test century in England on the second one day of the first Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Thursday.

Kohli, who struggled to make an impact when India last toured England in 2014 scoring 134 runs in 10 innings, waged a lone fight following a middle-order cave in prompted by way of England pacers Sam Curran and Ben Stokes.

The 29-year-old hit Ben Stokes for a square-cut 4 to deliver up his 22nd Test hundred that came in 172 balls with the assistance of 14 limitations.

Kohli benefitted from a dropped catch at 2nd slip when on 21. He nicked James Anderson only for Dawid Malan to drop a low catch at 2nd slip. Soon after finishing a 100-ball fifty together with his 9th 4, Kohli was once dropped again by way of Malan, this break day Stokes.

England, who gained the toss, were bowled out for 287 within the first innings in their 1,000th Test with an all too familiar batting cave in.

They have been well placed at 216 for 3 on Wednesday thanks to a partnership of 104 between captain Joe Root (80) and his Yorkshire team-mate Jonny Bairstow (70).

But the run out of Root by way of Kohli, who gave his England counterpart a vibrant send-off, resulted a stoop that noticed six wickets lost for just 67 runs.

Off-spinner Ashwin, belying his reputation as a poor performer outside the sub-continent, took 4 for 62 in 26 overs.
