Mexico: Hurricane Willa strengthens to category 4 storm

MEXICO CITY: Hurricane Willa received dangerous strength early on Monday as it churned towards Mexico's Pacific coast, a space frequented by means of vacationers, with torrential rain and major flooding within the offing, america National Hurricane Center (NHC) mentioned.

The Miami-based NHC upgraded Willa to a powerful Category four storm on the 5-step Saffir-Simpson scale as it unleashed most sustained winds of 155 mph (250 kmh) - just 2 mph shy of being designated a devastating Category 5 hurricane.

By early Monday, the storm was situated about 175 miles (285 km) southwest of Cabo Corrientes on the coast of Jalisco state.


The NHC estimated that total rainfall would range from 5 to 15 inches (12.5 cm to 38.1 cm) throughout stretches of Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa states, home to the white sand seaside inns of Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan.


Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Vicente, which formed within the Pacific off southern Mexico on Saturday, began to weaken while hovering alongside the southern Mexican coast on Sunday and by means of early Monday was situated about 195 miles (310 km) southeast of Acapulco.


It had most sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph) and the center of the storm would most probably stay just offshore or close to the southern coast of Mexico through Tuesday morning, in line with the NHC.
