GUWAHATI: Social media's speed and succeed in have helped peddlers of fake information get their message out. So Assam Police determined to use those self same attributes to counter the narrative.
In its tackle Queen's iconic 'Bohemian Rhapsody', Assam Police tweeted a 'Bohemian Factsody' on Tuesday: "Open your eyes/ Look up to the skies and see/ Real life is not a fantasy/ Fact check before you forward/ There's no escape from reality/ Mama, I don't wanna lie". And the social media international beloved it.
Tagged #Don'tFakeIt, the message in opposition to fake information went viral. "It is part of our continued effort to create awareness about the dangers of believing and passing on fake news," Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia stated.
The marketing campaign followed the Karbi Anglong lynching, spurred via fake information. "In June, two young men were lynched at Dokmoka by villagers who believed fake news that they were child-lifters," Saikia stated. "We started our fight against fake news on social media immediately. We have shut down several fake news campaigns," he stated. In the previous six months, social media cells were set up in each and every police district. "Professionals have been engaged to design our campaigns," he stated.
With Saikia at the helm, Assam Police has overhauled its public outreach initiatives. The checklist of a success campaigns come with the ones in opposition to domestic violence, cyber bullying, online fraud and harassment, and selling secure online practices. In July this year, its marketing campaign in opposition to stalkers received traction after Bollywood actor Kajol retweeted it: "Understand the difference between a compliment and harassment. Unwanted Attention is Stalking." "We use social media as an interface between citizens and police," Saikia stated.
