Samsung Electronics apologises for factory cancer cases

SEOUL: Samsung Electronics apologised Friday to workers who evolved cancer after operating at its semiconductor factories, finishing a decade-long dispute at the international's most sensible chipmaker.

"We sincerely apologise to the workers who suffered from illness and their families," stated Samsung co-president Kim Ki-nam.

"We have failed to properly manage health risks at our semiconductor and LCD factories."

Campaign groups say that 320 folks have suffered from work-related illnesses after being employed by means of Samsung, with 118 of them loss of life.

Under a deal introduced earlier this month, the company can pay reimbursement of up to 150 million received ($133,000) according to case.


It covers 16 varieties of cancer, another uncommon illnesses, miscarriages and congenital illnesses suffered by means of the workers' youngsters.


The scandal emerged in 2007 when former workers at its semiconductor and show factories in Suwon, south of Seoul, and their households stated that body of workers had been recognized or died of more than a few varieties of cancer.


A sequence of rulings and choices by means of courts, Seoul's state labour welfare company and a mediation committee adopted over more than 10 years, culminating in Friday's announcement.


Relatives' chief Hwang Sang-gi, whose 22-year-old son died of leukaemia, stated Friday: "The apology honestly was not enough for the families of the victims but we will accept it."
