Three held for smuggling wild animal body parts

Rajkot: The wooded area division on Saturday busted a smuggling racket of untamed animals’ frame portions from Mahuva taluka in Bhavnagar and arrested 3 individuals.
They seized 4 animal nails, believed to be of a panther or lion, from the accused identified as Danabhai Devayatabhai Garania (40) and Jilubhai Bhikhabhai Kamliya (30), each residents of Raydi village in Talala taluka of Bhavnagar and Kanu Vara (26) of Paniya village in Dhari taluka of Amreli.

All 3 had been booked for searching a Schedule-I animal below the Wildlife Protection Act and will likely be produced in the courtroom on Sunday, said wooded area officers.

Confirming the improvement, leader conservator of wooded area (CCF) in Junagadh, S K Mehta said, “Primarily, we imagine that the nails belong to a panther. However, the nails had been sent to the forensic lab for testing.”

Forest officers said that Garania and Kamliya had purchased the nails from Vara and were seeking to promote it in Bhavnagar at a worth starting from Rs 5 lakh to Rs10 lakh.

According to wooded area division assets, they had particular knowledge that somebody used to be seeking to promote nails of a wild animal close to Mahuva in Bhavnagar district. The wooded area division informer posing as a decoy buyer, convinced the accused duo to promote him the nails. On Friday evening, the accused were called to Gundarada village of Mahuva.

“The informer first built accept as true with with the accused and bargained to show that he used to be a real buyer. After gaining accept as true with, the accused confirmed the nails to the informer, who intimated us. We arrested Garania and Kamliya and seized two nails from them,” said a wooded area authentic.

During interrogation, the duo said that they had got the nails from Vara 4-5 years in the past.


A staff led by way of assistant conservator of wooded area V A Rathod and vary wooded area officer N D Makwana, which had busted the racket, reached Vara’s space in Paniya village of Dhari and found two extra animal nails in his ownership. Vara claimed that he had got the nails from a useless panther.


Deputy conservator of wooded area (DCF) Sandeep Kumar said, “The nails of untamed animals are smuggled to China and South East Asia, where it's in demand.”


According to the wooded area division assets, the nails are used for appearing black magic. Also, some other people put on the nails as a pendant or ring believing that it will give them power and wealth.
