NAVI MUMBAI: A knife-wielding man slashed the throat of a 30-year-old developer, who's a complainant in a cheating and forgery case, throughout the premises of the Vashi magistrate's (JMFC) court at CBD-Belapur on Monday. The incident occurred in the afternoon, when the developer, Narendra Patel, went to the bathroom at the court construction's fifth floor. The assailant adopted Patel inside the bathroom and, grabbing him from in the back of, slashed his throat with a knife sooner than escaping.
Hearing Patel's cries, cops entered the bathroom and rushed him to Apollo hospital in CBD. Inspector Shyam Shinde of CBD police station said, "The injured man whose throat has been slashed is stable and out of danger, doctors treating him have told us. As the unidentified attacker escaped, we have registered a case of attempt to murder under Section 307 of IPC."
Lawyers and other citizens told TOI security must be bolstered on the court's access issues. An eyewitness said the attacker simply escaped from the fifth floor and threw the knife at the third floor, from where it used to be recovered.
A top court legal professional and activist, Vinod Gangwal, present on court premises on the time of the incident, said, "This is alarming as the attacker got a knife with him inside the court premises. This means security checks need to be tightened for the safety of the public." Gangwal added, "Many lawyers and visitors could hear the victim's cries as he came out of the toilet, profusely bleeding from the neck. He was then rushed to hospital. Police should establish who all are behind the crime."
Court insiders pointed in the market aren't any CCTV cameras throughout the court, so cops have not were given any visuals of the way the attacker appears. A CBD police officer confirmed there were no CCTV cameras throughout the court construction.
Senior inspector of Economic Offences Wing Raju Sonawane said, "Patel had lodged a complaint with the EOW after being cheated by two estate agents, Prabhakar Mhatre (45) and Lavesh Jadhav (35), of Rs1.45 crore in Cidco's Airoli plot deal. The accused agents are in custody after we arrested them in November 2017 after registering an FIR at Nerul police station in September 2017. Prior to that, Mhatre had gone to Patel's office and threatened to kill him for registering an FIR against him and his aides. Patel had submitted CCTV camera footage from his office in which Mhatre could be seen threatening him. So police have to inquire into the attack from this angle as well."
