NEW DELHI: An afternoon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an interview that there have been no allegations against him in my opinion in the Rafale deal, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said this isn't the case and emphasised that it used to be the PM on my own who needs to answer questions concerning the deal.
In a sensational claim, Rahul also said Goa leader minister Manohar Parikkar “blackmailed” Modi with data associated with the Rafale deal, relating to an alleged tape recording. “There might be other tapes of this nature. The whole Goa cabinet heard what Mr Parikkar said,” Rahul said, elaborating on the contents of the tape which Speaker Sumitra Mahajan disallowed him from playing without first “authenticating” the contents.
Throwing the gauntlet at PM Modi and difficult him to a 20-minute one-on-one debate on the defence deal, Rahul also accused Modi of missing the “guts” to face questions and hiding in his place of business.
In a twin attack on Modi first in Lok Sabha after which at the celebration headquarters on Wednesday, Rahul also reiterated the call for for a joint parliamentary probe into the Rafale deal, and raised questions on the build up in value of the warring parties, procedures being “bypassed” to finalise the deal, and the exclusion of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to deal with Anil Ambani’s Reliance Defence. He also said if Congress is voted to energy in 2019, it will order a probe into the offset contract. Media reviews also quoted celebration MP Mallikarjun Kharge as pronouncing that if the Congress involves energy, it will want that the offset contract is given to HAL in “national hobby”, thereby implying that the contract to Anil Ambani’s corporate could also be cancelled.
The Rafale debate, which has grown more acerbic with time, also noticed Rahul accuse the PM and defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman of ducking questions. “The defence minister hides behind AIADMK other folks (who're protesting in the well),” Rahul said.
The Congress leader, on the other hand, pressed on, rubbishing Jaitley’s claim that Supreme Court had given the Rafale deal a “clean chit”. “PM is occupied with corruption. We are inquiring for a JPC and notice what comes out. We are assured that after a JPC is constituted, handiest two names will come up — Anil Ambani’s and Modi’s.”
He said the capability or high quality of Rafale airplane isn't in query. “The thing we say is that the PM changed the contract and helped Ambani steal from the Indian exchequer,” Rahul said, making it amply clear that the Congress won’t yield despite the counter attack mounted on it by the government, who raked up the alleged corruption in issues like the Bofors deal and the National Herald issue.
