LONDON: A British courtroom on Monday cleared the extradition of alleged bookie Sanjeev Chawla, a key accused in the cricket match-fixing scandal involving former South African captain Hansie Cronje in 2000.
The Westminster Magistrates' courtroom here gave the go-ahead to extradite 50-year-old Chawla. The case will now cross to Home Secretary Sajid Javid for a proper extradition order.
According to courtroom paperwork, the Delhi-born businessman had moved to the UK on a business visa in 1996, where he has been based whilst making journeys backward and forward to India.
After his Indian passport used to be revoked in 2000, Chawla received a UK passport in 2005 and is now a British citizen.
In November, the UK prime courtroom quashed a decrease courtroom's order towards extraditing Chawla to India and directed the district pass judgement on to re-start the extradition lawsuits towards him after being convinced with the assurances through the Indian government on the safety of jail prerequisites in New Delhi's Tihar jail.
Chawla had received the case towards his extradition to India in 2017 after the Westminster Magistrates' courtroom concluded there used to be a prima facie case to reply to but his human rights could not be assured in Tihar jail, where he used to be to be held.
In its ruling, the prime courtroom dominated that it is convinced with the assurances supplied through the Indian government regarding the safety of jail prerequisites in Tihar jail because it quashed the decrease courtroom's order towards extraditing Chawla.
District pass judgement on Crane's judgment dated October 16, 2017, had permitted a prima facie case towards Chawla over his position in the fixing of "cricket matches played between India and South Africa during the tour of the South African Cricket Team to India under the captainship of Cronje in February-March 2000".
