Karnataka: Bandipur fire doused, forest official confirms 'act of sabotage'

BANDIPUR: A major fireplace that gutted thousands of acres of land in the Bandipur tiger reserve has been doused.

Karnataka's top forest legitimate confirmed that an "act of sabotage" had led to the blaze.

"We have definite clues about those responsible for setting off the fire," main chief conservator of forests Punati Sridhar said. "Our probe is continuing. The forest department recently took strict action certain offenders and we suspect they were trying to retaliate."

Teams of firemen and foresters fought a desperate struggle in opposition to the conflagration - one the most devastating forest fires in the state. The fireplace devoured swathes of terrain in Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta (GS Betta) close to right here after ravaging portions of Kundakere and Maddur ranges a day previous.

Stumps of gutted bushes and a thick carpet of ash used to be all that remained.

By past due night time on Sunday, forest officials estimated that the fire had devoured no less than 60% of the 70-sqkm GB Range, and affected many other stretches of the forest spaces in the region. Forest officials are operating on all options - including the use of fresh shrubs and sand - to douse the blaze.

The fireplace couldn't spread to crucial tiger habitat. Bandipur has the best tiger population in India, hosting every fourth animal that's accounted for in the country.

Though the chief of the forest pressure on Sunday mentioned that the fire used to be man-made, the Karnataka government on Sunday declared its primary process used to be to keep watch over the fire.

"We have definite clues about those responsible for setting off the fire," PCCXF Sridhar said. "Our probe is continuing. The forest department recently took strict action certain offenders and we suspect they were trying to retaliate."

There were sporadic reports of fire in Bandipur over the last week sooner than Saturday's fireplace razed thousands of acres of forestland. On Sunday, thick plumes of smoke endured to billow into the sky out of forest spaces in GS Betta.

Foresters said stipulations were perfect for a forest fireplace to spread rapidly. Dry grass and lantana fuelled the blaze fireplace as it temporarily spread to various wooded spaces, leaving devastation in its wake.

Stumps of gutted bushes and a thick carpet of ash used to be all that remained of the dense underbrush and deciduous tree quilt. Though foresters on Sunday said no animals had perished in the fireplace, IdealNews (see images) noticed the burnt antlers of deer, squirrels burned alive and no less than one useless python in razed portions of the reserve.

Forest minister Satish Jarkiholi visited the spot on Sunday, made an inspection of the surrounding spaces and held meetings with top forest officials including forest chief Sridhar.

Since Thursday, Bandipur range, spread over 874sqkm, has reported widespread fireplace injuries in Chamarajanagar and Mysuru districts: those have devoured up 8,000 acres in 4 ranges of Bandipur. GS Range is close to Gundlupet in Chamarajanagar.

Forest minister Satish Jarkiholi on Sunday toured the affected spaces and held a gathering with forest officials, including forest chief Sridhar.
