MUMBAI: A spate of congratulatory messages and public celebrations flooded the cityscape Tuesday as Mumbaikars saluted the Indian Air Force for its retaliatory attack on Pakistan's terror camps. Angry, mournful vigils had erupted within the wake of the martyrdom of 40 CRPF staff in Pulwama on February 14.

The town and neighbouring Navi Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan witnessed public festivity. Even as main points of the casualties suffered via Pakistan have been awaited, a section of politicians felt that the 'Surgical Strike 2' had "avenged" the Pulwama attacks. "How's the josh?" they exclaimed on posters and on social media, echoing top minister Narendra Modi's oft-repeated slogan adapted from the movie 'Uri'.

The two portals of energy in South Mumbai, Mantralaya and BMC headquarters, saw public representatives milling round to lift slogans and distribute chocolates.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis praised the Air Force. "This is a new and a strong India led by Narendra Modi," he said. Both homes of legislature moved a congratulatory movement over the air strike.

Shiv Sena's younger turk Aaditya Thackeray tweeted, "Today’s anti terrorist ops by the Indian Air Force prove our intent and capability. This is our war on terror. Let us not stop now till we crush terrorism and its patrons completely."

Party MP Sanjay Raut lauded the IAF but said revenge for Pulwama would not be entire till alleged mastermind Masood Azhar of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) was "struck down". MNS chief Raj Thackeray "applauded and saluted" the IAF for its "valiant and focussed attack in destroying the terrorist base". Thackeray has been cosying up to the NCP lately and focused on PM Modi's policies.

BJP MLA Ram Kadam disbursed kaju katli within the Vidhan Bhavan premises, including that Narendra Modi's management would give a "befitting reply" to Pakistan. Samajwadi Party chief Abu Azmi also disbursed chocolates.

Corporators from the BJP, the second greatest celebration within the BMC, accumulated ahead of the company assembly to lift the tricolour and chant slogans of "Vande Mataram" and "Bharat Mata ki Jai". In the assembly, the heat of the renewed Shiv Sena-BJP alliance was visible. Sena chief Vishakha Raut tabled a 'congratulatory proposal' following which politicians slicing across celebration traces praised the strike. BJP corporator Atul Shah deliberate to have a good time via lighting 800 lotus-shaped lamps as part of the celebration's political Kamal Jyoti Yatra.

Students of a gurukul assembled on the selfie point outside the BMC. One kid dressed as Shivaji Maharaj wielded a sword whilst others held up art work of fighter aircraft.

Nearby in Anjuman Islam, Muslim organisations and activists lit firecrackers, shouted slogans and sang patriotic songs. "Students of management, hotel management and law participated," said Anjuman president Dr Zaheer Qazi. In Nagpada, contributors of the NGO Sahas Foundation waved the tricolour and disbursed chocolates.

In Naupada Thane, a 'poli bhaji' centre disbursed small packets of carrot halwa whilst another workforce celebrated the vintage Maharashtrian method via handing sugar outside Thane station. BJP-Sena led a political amassing full of sloganeering in Vashi.

In Kalyan, Shiv Sena carried the nationwide flag to Shivaji Chowk. In Titwala, Yuva Sena employees lit crackers and shared chocolates. In Dombivli, MNS employees also thanked the IAF for "avenging Pulwama".

The movie industry exulted with delight for the Indian Air Force. Lata Mangeshkar said to a TV channel, "I have been watching since morning and I'm very happy that our armed forces are so prepared and strong. I always say that India is there because of our armed forces. We live in this country and are very fortunate."

Salman Khan tweeted to say, "Respect Indian Air Force. Jai ho!" Akshay Kumar exclaimed, "Proud of our Indian Air Force fighters for destroying terror camps. Andar ghus ke maaro! Quiet no more!"

Ajay Devgn wrote, "Mess with the best, die like the rest." Southern megastar Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan, Mahesh Babu, Rakeysh Mehra, Sidharth Malhotra, Ekta Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Richa Chadha and Emraan Hashmi all lauded the courageous pilots of the IAF. Anupam Kher saluted the top minister whilst Raveena Tandon "saluted the 12 bravehearts for meting out justice for our Pulwama boys".

Preity Zinta said, "Killing a terrorist today saves many innocent lives tomorrow... A single blow by a blacksmith is equal to a 100 blows by a goldsmith." Zoya Akhtar, Varun Dhawan, Vivek Oberoi, Sonu Sood, Sonakshi Sinha and Suniel Shetty wrote "Jai Hind".

On social media, a few people like Yashwant Deshmukh recommended sobriety and caution. Urging citizens to keep away from reacting like they might to an Indo-Pak cricket match, they requested if the martyrs of Pulwama have been deemed to be avenged via this strike, or if a sustained marketing campaign to end extremism was known as for.
