Padmashree Mukund Nayak gets Sangeet Natak Academy award

Ranchi: Padma Shri Mukund Nayak, an exponent of jhumar people track and dance, gained the Sangeet Natak Academy Award from President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtripati Bhawan in New Delhi on Wednesday. The award has been confered upon him for his contribution to people music of Jharkhand.

Nayak, a noted songwriter, drummer, dancer and a political activist, is the first in Jharkhand to obtain the celebrated award underneath people track class. He gained Padma Shri in 2017 and the state govt’s Sanskritik Samman also in 2017.


Speaking to IdealNews on Wednesday, Nayak said, “It used to be a proud moment reaching such an honour from the President. I would like to congratulate all the artists of Jharkhand and I will continue to advertise the tradition of the state.”


Born to a Ghasi tribal family at Bokba village in Simedega district, Nayak finished his commencement in Science from Deogarh Vidyapith. His journey as a performer began in 1974 with his audition at Akashvani. When the Regional Tribal Language division used to be arrange at Ranchi University in 1980, Nayak become associated with it. His hobby for music become a part of the text guide for the university. In 1988, Nayak’s and his troupe carried out at the 3rd Hong Kong Institute for the Promotion of Chinese Culture.
