Police to book imam’s brothers, cousins

Thiruvananthapuram: Police right here have decided to sign in instances towards seven extra individuals for helping former imam Shafeek Al Qasimi, who has been accused of sexually abusing a minor girl, evade arrest. They are the two brothers of Shafeek, two of his cousins and three SDPI leaders of Tholicode.

The police have discovered that Shafeek’s brothers Al Ameen and Noushad and cousins Sudheer and Ashraf had transparent roles in helping him evade arrest. Among them, Noushad, Sudheer and Ashraf are still suspected to be with Shafeek.


Police had booked Shafeek two weeks ago and three days later his brothers have been taken into custody from Ernakulam. However, police didn't file their arrest. Instead, they kept summoning the brothers for questioning on a daily basis, hoping that it might drive Shafeek to give up.


“We will make alterations within the FIR on this regard and record a file earlier than the court on Wednesday,” said crime branch (rural) DSP D Asokan, the investigation officer. A recent phase, 228A of IPC, could be added within the FIR towards Shafeek for revealing the title of the woman through social media. He had discussed her title in a voice clip he circulated through WhatsApp, claiming his innocence.


He added that the names of the SDPI leaders could be printed handiest after the file used to be filed earlier than the court. They are accused of offering financial support to Shafeek to remain in hiding.
