Air Marshal Cariappa, Pak POW in 1965, cheers release of pilot

MYSURU: Air Marshal (retd) KC Cariappa, son of Field Marshal KM Cariappa, the primary commander-in-chief of the Indian Army, has expressed pleasure at Pakistan high minister Imran Khan’s announcement that Pakistan would free up wing commander Abhinandan Varthaman on Friday.

Recalling the 4 months he spent as a prisoner of battle all the way through the Indo-Pakistan battle of 1965, Cariappa on Thursday recalled the fear of the unknown that occupied every waking hour after his aircraft was shot down and Pakistani troops captured him.

“As a prisoner of battle, I had no access to data,” he mentioned. “We had no out of doors information, no updates about the battle — whether or not it was nonetheless in development or had ended, we had no clue.”

“I used to be flying at high velocity when I used to be shot down on the remaining day of the battle. I ejected at low height and landed at once amidst Pakistani military staff,” he mentioned.

“I used to be in solitary confinement for few weeks. The second I used to be put with different prisoners — six others from the IAF and 51 from Indian Army — my morale advanced. The battle was underway and each the countries had been signatories to the Geneva Convention. There was a hope that we might be repatriated but had been unaware when that might happen.”

“I don’t suppose any of the 58 prisoners had been badly handled by means of the Pakistani military,” mentioned Cariappa, who was in his past due 20s on the time. “We had been interrogated for info but we were not tortured. It was as much as every prisoner to come to a decision how company and robust he had to keep all the way through the questioning.”

“I felt saddened for Abhinandan’s circle of relatives and his colleagues when learnt that he were captured,” he mentioned.

‘Thank God there was no social media then’

“Thank God there was no social media in our time,” Cariappa mentioned. “Social media will also be harmful and defeating for the morale of members of the family of battle prisoners.”

“It is saddening to peer netizens importing footage of wing commander Abhinandan being overwhelmed up and blood oozing from his face,” he mentioned. “Imagine how his circle of relatives and fogeys must have felt and their pain.”

”Social media is insensitive to the situation. There is an excessive amount of talk but little wisdom. It is stuffed with rumours and gossip. Abhinandan himself refused to expose private details to queries by means of Pakistani military staff, but netizens disclosed his identification and his circle of relatives’s address. People must have some sense of duty,” Cariappa mentioned.
