Canacona tribals await first tryst with cashew crop

PANAJI: Cashew saplings planted via tribals of Ziltawadi in Canacona have started flowering inside the first 12 months of planting.

This is the first time the Ziltawadi tribals have ventured into cultivation of the plantation crop.

“Cashew saplings takes no less than six to seven years to yield fruit, however a graft can achieve this inside 3 years. In the case of the crop planted via Ziltawadi tribals, flowering has begun inside six months. “We went to Ziltawadi last 12 months, wherein 35 tribals planted 1,000 saplings of ICAR’s cashew types throughout 12 acres of land. We gave the farmers coaching and supplied them with cashew saplings. About 10% of the crops have already started to flower,” Chakurkar stated.

Irrigation amenities, like motor pumps and pipelines, had been upgraded with the institute’s help to facilitate farming within the space.
