NEW DELHI: Twenty-one-year-old Kriti shudders as she relives her 30 mins of horror when a large fireplace broke out at a paying visitor lodging in northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar on Saturday. "Even a five-minute delay would have spelt the end for us," she told TOI on Sunday.
A civil services and products aspirant, Kriti recalls her desperation at being stuck, together with six others girls, at the first ground of the four-storey house even as the blaze engulfed the ground underneath - it used to be like a never-ending watch for lend a hand, she stated. Fire officers stated they received a distress name at four.30pm and two tenders have been in an instant pressed into motion. When the blaze couldn't be brought under keep watch over, every other fireplace mushy used to be sent. The fireplace used to be in spite of everything doused at five.30pm, an officer stated.
Police stated the reason for the blaze used to be a short-circuit in an air conditioner at the ground ground. As the electrical energy meters burst because of over the top warmth, there used to be no room left for the ladies to escape.
"I was in the washroom while my housemates were either busy studying or doing other household chores. It was one of them, Priyanka, who first raised alarm. Even as we tried to figure out our escape, smoke engulfed the entire house. There was nowhere to go," Kriti stated.
Her housemate, Shweta (20), stated they all gathered in the washroom because it used to be the only position at the ground with air flow.
"All this while, we kept shouting for help. An uncle who lives next door tried to find his way in to help, but couldn't do much because of the smoke," Shweta stated. After nearly 20 mins - which seemed to them like years - the ladies heard a policeman shouting out at them. "Holding our breath, we rushed to the back door. It was difficult to see anything because of the thick smoke, but we managed to break a window. From there, were jumped on to a ladder that the policeman had placed there," she stated.
The incident has obviously left the ladies shaken. "I had shifted to this PG barely a month ago and this has been the most unpleasant experience of my life. I am going back to Mathura and don't plan to return anytime soon. It will take us a long time to get over this incident," Kriti stated. A senior police officer stated a case of negligence were registered towards the landlord of the house.
