Adhir Maity murder: Former Trinamool councillor gets life term

KOLKATA: A judicial Justice of the Peace court on Monday sentenced Shambhunath Kow — the top suspect within the homicide case of Adhir Maity, a member of Trinamool Congress’ ward 58 committee — to life imprisonment. Six others have been additionally awarded life sentence by way of the judge.

The ninth judicial Justice of the Peace on the Alipore court, Sujay Sengupta, had previous pronounced the seven accused as guilty. Former councillor Kow’s attorney Arindam Das mentioned that they would transfer the higher court against the judgment.

“It is a welcome judgment and the judge has deliberated upon each detail of the case. Maity was suffering from cardiac illnesses and it was identified to him. He deliberately attacked Maity, hit him on chest and because of that he died. Therefore, slapping him with homicide fees was justified,” mentioned Shakti Bhattacharya, public prosecutor.


Back in March 20, 2013 two rival groups of Trinamool Congress supporters had clashed over the possession of a piece of land near Dhapa off EM Bypass. The clash resulted within the death of Maity, with councillor of the ward Kow having been charged with his homicide. Kow fled Kolkata and took shelter on the residence of his nephew essentially. He was at the run since then and were to Odisha and Jharkhand on the lookout for a shelter and was in any case arrested from Balia district in Uttar Pradesh in April 2013. Police framed homicide fees against Kow in 2014 and slapped sections 302 (homicide) and 307 (try to homicide) of the IPC against him.
