Coimbatore: Okay Sukumar, 19 of Kadaiyanallur in Tirunelveli district goals of joining the Army and attempted 3 times to get enlisted. He is in the town for the fourth attempt and used to be noticed slumbering on the pavement on Avinashi road on Sunday night time. Not simply Sukumar, greater than 2,000 youths from more than a few portions of the country who're here to take part in the Army recruitment had been spending the night time on the footpath as they weren't provided accommodation.
The 110 infantry Battalion (Territorial Army), Redfields, Coimbatore performed a recruitment for eight squaddies (general accountability) and 3 squaddies (housekeepers) vacancies for enlisting in the Territorial Army on the Police Recruitment School (PRS) campus on Avinashi Road here on Monday morning. The army announced that candidates from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka and the Union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Goa, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep and Puducherry participated in the recruitment. After the physical tests, candidate who're provisionally selected will undergo a medical examination and interview till October 27.
Young males who came to the city on Sunday had to spend the night time on the pavement stretch from PRS campus to Hotel Residency, amid a corporation dust bin, garbage and clumps of shrubs. They appeared k with it, however instructed TOI that lack of bathrooms amenities used to be indeed an issue.
"There was no drinking water facility and the youths were not able to sleep due to mosquito menace. We request the army to provide some temporary shelters for a day," stated a participant.
Sukumar stated he had completed a degree direction and aspired to develop into a soldier. "My father is a mason and my mother is a home maker. I have had opportunities to work in private firms. But my passion is the Army," he stated.
He stated he had long gone to Thanjavur final 12 months to take part in the Army recruitment and there too he had to sleep on the pavement. "I got completely wet in the heavy rain. There was no place to escape from the rain. Many youths were not able to perform well in the physical test the next day," stated Sukumar.
Sukumar and his friend P Sathish, 19, from Koodankulam in Tirunelveli district stated spending the night time on the pavement didn't trouble them. "If we get posted in hostile areas and have to survive we should get used to such conditions," stated Sathish.
I Alexander from Dindigul district, used to be a retired soldier from Indian Army. He used to be slumbering on the platform at the side of his grandson Y Jegadh Samuel, 19. "I was working in Kargil and was the member of Indian Peace Keeping Force. I got retirement from the army in 1989 and we grabbed opportunity very easily. Now more than 2,000 youths are waiting to grab the vacancies of 11 soldiers post," stated Alexander.
S Sreehari, 21 from Kozhikode and his two pals came to Coimbatore on Sunday around 11.30 pm to take part in the army recruitment.
"The army has started the physical test around 4 am and completed the test around 9 am on Monday. Most of them youths were not having enough sleep and no one question about them," stated probably the most participant. "If the army would provide temporary shelter for the youths, then the youths would perform very well in the physical test," he added
