LUCKNOW: It's official now. Uttar Pradesh has 16,461 madrassas, including 560 government-aided and eight,171 attached to the Madrassa Modernisation scheme, as in line with the information on the madrassa portal of the UP Board of Madrasa Education.
Until now, the state authorities didn't have official figures on the madrassas below the UP Madrasa Education Board, regardless that the Board's estimates put them at 16,000.
"A total of 16,461 madrassas from across UP have locked in their details. The details will be verified by the district minority officers next week, and disputes, if any, will be settled at the district level. No more registrations will be done now," said Board registrar Rahul Gupta. Board officials said since the ultimate choice of madrassas is greater than the estimates it's likely that there are not any bogus madrassas in UP.
On August 18 this 12 months, the Board had launched the madrassa portal to weed out bogus madrassas.
It had sought details from all madrassas within the state. But by September 15 closing date for filing details, the portal got responses only from 50% madrassas. So the closing date used to be prolonged to October 15.
