Coimbatore: Many police athletes, who came to take part within the 35th annual district sports meet within the town on Sunday, alleged lack of support and permission to practise from the higher officers.
Three girls head constables and two men police officers even got alternatives to constitute India at the Asia stage. "But we couldn't go as we did not get permission to practise at all," mentioned a head constable who has been a national champion for the past seven years. She added that even for the meet held on Sunday, she used to be denied permission. "I have taken leave and come," she mentioned.
The police officers mentioned that they just sought permission to follow after responsibility. "We hardly get any time to practise. I got opportunities to represent at the Asian meet thrice but could not go. The station inspectors do not support us," mentioned a police authentic. Another police authentic mentioned that they were representing the dept, the state and the country. "But senior officials said that this was for their personal gain and so they would not permit it," mentioned the officer.
As per the senior police officers, armed reserve police and Tamil Nadu state police have a separate wing for sports and the officers concentrate best on it. Deputy commissioner (regulation and order) S Lakshmi mentioned, "Many police officials practise and take part in various events across the country. TSP and Armed Reserve do not have mandatory daily duty. But local police officials have a lot of duties to fulfill. Also, in times of emergencies, they cannot expect leave or permission."
She added that some station might be sensitive and there can be some emergencies. "Also, constables and head constables only have eight hours duty. They can easily practise during their free time. But whenever requested, we always send them for events and support them," she mentioned.
