SILCHAR: Heavy rain and hurricane performed spoilsport in Diwali and Kali Puja celebrations within the Barak Valley spaces of Assam.
Showers accompanying thunderstorms lashed the valley at around 9 pm on Thursday, just as hymns were beginning to pour in from Kali Puja pandals and the sounds of crackers was filling the air.
The shiny lights that were put up as decorations went off all through the valley and most of the pandals and gates were demolished within the hurricane. People who had thronged the pandals and streets in huge numbers scuttled for shelter within the rains.
While puja organizers were busy saving idols of Kali from the downpour, rainwater submerged most of the pandals or even some low-lying streets. A organizer of the Janiganj Kali Puja committee, the one of the greatest pujas within the town, stated their gates collapsed within the hurricane. "The puja was performed with great difficulty," he stated.
Anumber of pujas, including Universal Club, Link Road, Srima Pally, Ghaniyala, Vanguard Club, Malugram, Kallol Sangh, Sonai Road, Silchar Smashan Kalibari amongst 350 others were suffering from the rain and hurricane. Rain endured to lash the valley on Friday too, till the time of filing this file. While electricity was revived in some parts of Silchar in the dead of night on Thursday, most of the spaces of the valley have been reeling underneath darkness. "The disruption was caused by the storm and we are trying our best to normalize the situation," stated Central Assam Power distribution Company Ltd, Cachar district's deputy common manager Biswajit Kar.
