‘Salman’ sold for Rs 50,000 in Chitrakoot

ALLAHABAD: Chitrakoot is also known for non secular, cultural, historical temples and archaeological significance, but the place is also famous for internet hosting 'Gadha Mela' (donkey fair) at the banks of Mandakini.

This Diwali, the three-day donkey fair was once organised at the banks of river Mandakini through which around 3,000 donkeys of various breeds and pedigrees have been introduced from different parts of the rustic for sale. 'Salman' from Shankargarh in Allahabad was once offered at the highest price of Rs 50,000 within the fair that ended on Saturday night.


Local resident LK Kushwaha said, "It is believed that the donkey fair was started by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Chitrakoot more than 300 years ago."


Mela organiser Munna Lal said, "Traders dealing in donkeys arrive from different parts of the country. Depending upon the breed and age, donkeys are being sold between Rs 3,000 and Rs 50,000 or above. It depends on the market where dealers and buyers may earn profit or suffer losses."


Trader Gorelal said, "Donkeys are named after filmstars and politicians to catch the fancy of buyers. This is the spot where donkeys gain significance."


Another dealer Malkhan said that all through Diwali, buyers from different districts include more than a few species of donkeys, mules and even horses to take part within the fair. The buying and selling continues for 3 days. It is alleged to be the largest fair of donkeys in the world.
