Water bills after June revision shock residents

GURGAON: After revision in water tariff by way of Huda in June, the newest water invoice won by way of town residents has left them in a rude shock.

"The water bill I just received has more than doubled as compared to the the last one. If earlier I was getting a bill for Rs 1,000, it has increased to at least Rs 3,000 now. Residents are not understanding why there should be such a steep hike when water supply is still irregular. In some areas in DLF Phase-III, where I live, we don't get water in the summer season and have to depend on private water-tankers to survive," stated Nagen Patnaik, a resident.

"We approached DLF and were informed that this hike has been initiated by Huda. Ideally, the hike should have taken place after solving all existing problems and ensuring there is no scarcity of water. Our area is anyway going to be handed over to MCG in the coming days and Huda should have waited till the handover took place and not increased the tariff," he stated.

However, Huda government maintained that this steep hike could not have been avoided. "The last time that the rates were revised was a long time ago in 2001. Ever since that, there has been no increase at all in 16 years, despite the fact that the costs of power, labour and equipment have risen significantly over the years. All this time, the tariff remained unchanged and we kept incurring losses," stated a senior Huda legit.

"However, we could not have kept incurring losses and had to increase the tariff. Therefore, we took the decision to increase it in June. As far as addressing deficiencies is concerned, we are going to ensure that the problems faced by the consumers are addressed," he stated.
