Liquor mafia busted, two arrested in Salem

SALEM: The Ammapet police busted a liquor mafia with the arrest of two individuals, who were smuggling Indian made overseas liquor (IMFL) into the town from Puducherry, during a car test on the Salem-Chennai national highway close to Kundukkallur Vediappan temple at Ammapet right here on Saturday.

The police also seized from them contraband value Rs 2.16 lakh, a provider van and a multi application car.

The arrested were known as Ok Rajamurugan, 44, of Udaiyapatty, and R Ramesh, 38, of Mettu Street.


The duo was bringing the consignment from Puducherry when the police stopped them close to Kundukkallur Vediappan temple at Ammapet house.


"It was a pre-planned operation carried out by our special team based on a tip. We found 300 liquor bottles in the multi utility vehicle and another 239 in the carrier van," stated J Nagarajan, inspector, Ammapet police station.


The duo, he added, was ordinary offenders. They used to smuggle IMFL bottles from Puducherry to be sold in the city at the next worth.


"We have registered a case and further investigations are underway," the inspector stated.
