Pune: The Hadapsar police have booked a lady and a veterinary physician for euthanising a wholesome female pomeranian that had been the former's pet for 9 years.
Non-governmental organisation Mission Possible's founder Padmini Stump and president Ravindra Kasbekar, along with animal lover Parinaaz Daruwalla, filed an FIR against Lea's owner Varuna Saxena of Hadapsar and Nigdi-based vet Kapil Jaikar on Sunday.
Stump stated Saxena had left Lea, nine, at her NGO in October after claiming that she was once aggressive. The NGO then let a Mumbai circle of relatives adopt Lea. "All this while, Lea did not exhibit aggressive behaviour. But then, Saxena objected to the adoption by the Mumbai family and brought Lea back. However, we had to request Saxena to take her former pet back in for some time. This is because Lea was on heat and we have male dogs here," she stated.
Janak Rajpurohit, who had adopted Lea, additionally rejected Saxena's claims of the canine being aggressive.
Kasbekar stated Saxena took Lea away on Friday and euthanised her within an hour. "Had we known, we would have never let Saxena take Lea," he stated. Even veterinarian Jeya Bharat, who had checked Lea earlier, stated the canine gave the impression commonplace. When contacted, Saxena stated, "When Mission Possible asked me to take Lea back, I was not told that it was a temporary move. Since I have a two-year-old daughter, I could not keep Lea and had her euthanized," she stated.
When asked why she objected to Lea's adoption, Saxena stated, "I feared for the safety of the new adopters."
Jaikar, who euthanised Lea, stated, "I inspected the canine and found that her behavior was not normal. After listening to Lea's history from her vet and the owner, we decided to put her down."
Assistant inspector Kiran Londhe from the Hadapsar police stated, "Lea's owner claimed that the dog was aggressive and she had to put her down. We have recorded the vet's statement too. It is illegal to euthanise a healthy dog."
The suspects had been booked below Section 11 (1) of the Prevention to Cruelty to Animals Act and Section 429 of the IPC.
