BHUBANESWAR: The BJD on Friday demanded in the Rajya Sabha to extend the minimum give a boost to price (MSP) of paddy to Rs 2,930 according to quintal, a suggestion also supported by means of different parties, including Congress, Samajwadi Party and CPI.
BJD leader in the upper space Dilip Tirkey raised the issue all through the 0 hour and alleged that low MSP has driven the farmers right into a crisis. For the 2017-18, the Centre has fixed Rs 1,550 as MSP for common number of paddy.
"According to the estimate of the Odisha government, farmers have to spend Rs 2,344 as input cost for producing one quintal of paddy. But the Centre is only giving Rs 1,550 per quintal as MSP. The paddy producing farmers are under pressure as input costs like price of seed and fertilizer, irrigation and labour cost have substantially increased," Tirkey mentioned.
Stating that the Odisha meeting had unanimously handed a solution, in the hunt for build up of MSP of paddy to Rs 2,930 according to quintal, Tirkey took on the NDA government for rejecting the proposal.
"In its election manifesto ahead of 2014 elections, the NDA government had promised at least 50% hike above the cost of production as MSP. But in reality, the current MSP rate is much less than the input cost. Keeping in mind the interest of crores of farmers of the country, the Centre should increase the MSP to Rs 2,930 per quintal," Tirkey added.
Naresh Agrawal of Samajwadi Party, Kumari Selja of Congress, D Raja of CPI and A U Singhdeo of BJD were amongst who supported Tirkey on the issue in the upper space.
While chief minister Naveen Patnaik has taken up the issue with the Centre at the contemporary inter-state council meeting held in New Delhi on November 25, the BJD also staged dharna near Raj Bhavan, challenging build up in the paddy MSP.
