Day after 5 Congress MLAs quit, Rahul Gandhi appoints new Meghalaya unit chief

NEW DELHI: A day after 5 Congress MLAs resigned from the Meghalaya assembly to enroll in NDA constituent NPP, party president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday appointed Celestine Lyngdoh the brand new state unit leader changing DD Lapang.
Lyngdoh is a minister in Chief Minister Mukul Sangma's cupboard.

Lapang shall be an adviser to the state unit.

Rahul appointed Vincent H Pala the working president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee.

He formed a 13-member pradesh election committee under Lyngdoh, with Mukul Sangma as a member. The state goes to polls early next 12 months.


In a setback to the Congress in Meghalaya, 8 MLAs together with 5 from the party, the previous day resigned from the assembly to enroll in NDA-affiliated National People's Party (NCC).


With the resignations, the selection of Congress MLAs in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly has come down to 24.


Rahul Gandhi also formed an election committee, marketing campaign committee and media committee of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress in view of elections in the state, AICC basic secretary Janardan Dwivedi said in a observation.


Ok Therie would be the chairman of the election committee for Nagaland. Ayangba Aonok will head the marketing campaign committee, whilst Capt G Ok Zhimomi will lead the media committee.
