The boy is admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in Ghaziabad after a surgery used to be conducted to extricate the bullet from his skull. The boy had allegedly became the gun on himself after opening hearth at the girl in a secluded lane in Sector four of Vasundhara.

"We are keeping a close tab on the health of the boy. After investigations, we have ruled out the involvement of any other person in the incident. We also investigated if the boy committed the crime because of the girl's possible friendship with another boy. However, this angle has been ruled out completely," SSP Hari Narayan Singh informed TOI.

Slum dwellers who live within the lane sandwiched between Vartalok Apartment and Eastern Gate Apartment in Vasundhara, where the incident took place, said they had been two gunshots.

Komal, who runs a laundry in a shanty, said she heard a gunshot around 6.30 pm. "We were watching a movie and when we rushed out on hearing the gunshot, we saw the girl and the boy lying outside the rear boundary wall of Vartalok Apartment. The boy woke up after a few minutes. He had a gun in his hand and he fired in the air. Bleeding, he asked many locals who soon gathered for a mobile phone. We were scared. He took out the girl's phone from her skirt pocket. He either made a call or received a call with the phone and then smashed it on the road. He then fled from the spot in a scooter. Ten minutes later, a black Scorpio with several people inside came and took the girl's body away," she informed TOI.

Another resident, Darshini, said: "The boy returned with two other boys on the scooter after the Scorpio left. He was furious on not finding the girl's body. One of the boys accompanying him broke down and made a call somewhere saying the girl had been shot. They went away and again returned after some time on a motorcycle."

"We have examined the eyewitnesses who live in shanties in the lane. The boy and the girl had together reached the lane behind Vartalok Apartment on a scooter. There was a heated argument between them. The boy whipped out a revolver from his bag and shot at the girl. He then shot at himself but the bullet remained stuck to his skull and did not enter inside. He fled from the spot on the scooter and abandoned it near a shopping complex. A few men from Kanawani village, who were passing nearby, heard about the incident and took the girl to the hospital in their own vehicle. The boy returned to the spot with a couple of friends on a motorcycle looking for the revolver when he was nabbed. Locals told us two gunshots were fired at the spot. However, we have recovered four used cartridges from the location," said investigating officer Paras Malik.

The girl's parents said they be expecting police to conduct a rapid and unbiased probe within the case. "My daughter was a brave girl. She stood her ground fearlessly against the boy who threatened her at gunpoint and took her to the secluded lane when she was returning home after tuitions," the lady's father informed TOI.

Teachers at the coaching institute in Sector 2C of Vasundhara, where the boy and the lady studied in combination, said the lady had left after categories at around 6.02 pm while the boy used to be absent.

"The girl used to attend tuitions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for Economics. She had arrived for classes around 5.06 pm on December 20 and had left as usual. The boy was enrolled in our institute for Economics and Accountancy for Class XI. He did not attend the class on December 20. Both seemed to us like normal friends. The boy was good in studies and had secured 20 out of 25 in an Accountancy unit test held recently in his school. The boy and the girl had known each other from some institute in which they had previously studied together," the institute's administrative officer informed TOI.
