Here, 'elusive' drum-beaters help pub licence applicants

GURUGRAM: Strange it is going to sound, but people who wish to open a bar within the town should make a public announcement by beating drums within the house to ask objections from the locals.
According to a record printed in Navbharat Times, the Punjab Excise Act 1914 makes it mandatory for licence candidates to follow this 100-year-old practice.

The applicant is requested to rent a drum-beater and a cycle rickshaw to make announcement within the house wherein he intends to open the bar or pub.

The thought in the back of this outdated practice is to apprise the native residents in regards to the application and to ask their objections in this regard.

However, the method is never practised these days. According to the record, the candidates have started placing the required bills of drum-beaters and rickshaws with out in reality hiring them.

There are 189 pubs and bars working within the east zone of the town while the west zone has 89 shops. The town also has 37 micro breweries.

Similarly, Rewari too has two breweries that have been granted licence after fulfilling the required condition.
