Myanmar refugees to return home: Assam Rifles AIZAWL: Officers in the Assam Rifles

AIZAWL: Officers in the Assam Rifles on Wednesday said the repatriation of round 1,600 Myanmarese refugees from Mizoram's Lawngtlai district would quickly begin in view of Myanmarese army's operations towards Arakan Army (AA) militants, which began in November.

Assam Rifles officers said the stakeholders — together with the Myanmarese Army, Lawngtlai district administration, other folks of 4 villages where the Myanmarese other folks have been sheltered and the refugees — have already been contacted. The refugees entered Mizoram and took refuge in Lawngtlai district's Zochachhuah, Laitlang, Dumzautlang and Hmawngbuchhuah villages after violent clashes broke out between the Myanmarese army and AA militants.

Villagers and refugees said the Myanmarese army used floor troops and helicopters to flush out AA insurgents with bases inside Chin Hills in Myanmar near the Mizoram border spaces, forcing villagers from Varang, Phaleiwa, Pakangwa, Stangwa and Mulaw to escape their respective villages and crossed the border to enter Mizoram.

The refugees may now be repatriated as the situation in the Chin Hills has improved. "We have received a positive signal from the Myanmarese amy and we are assured that peace have been restored in the troubled area to enable all the refugees to return home," an Assam Rifles officer said.
