NHRC asks Odisha govt to pay Rs 1000 each to tribal girls who had to leave hostel

BHUBANESWAR: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on November 22 directed the state govt to pay repayment of Rs 1000 each and every to 161 tribal lady students of Bhaluguda Sevashram in Malkangiri district for now not giving them sufficient food and adequate standard of living.


The women had left the hostel, run by way of the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes division, on November 25, 2013 complaining that the hostel did not give them enough food. The replica of the NHRC order was made to be had online on Thursday.


"Non-availability of proper food and denial of adequate standard of living in Bhaluguda Sevashram, Malkangiri, has violated the right to life and it is a grave violation of human rights of 161 girl students of government-run hostel for tribal girls and therefore, the Commission recommends a sum of Rs. 1000," the commission said it in its order.


Hearing a petition by way of rights campaigner Subash Mohapatra, the commission requested leader secretary (AP Padhi) to submit compliance report along side proof of cost of Rs 1,61,000 within six weeks.


The govt had earlier apprised the commission that healing measures have been alrady taken to toughen the quality of food and different hostel control aspects. The govt had also taken disciplinary against the pinnacle Sevika who was found guilty of inactiveness and had transferred the erring lecturers.
