Use of thermocol, silver foil banned in Ooty from Jan 15

Udhagamandalam: The Nilgiris district management has banned use of thermocol, silver foil and PP (non-woven) luggage and sheets among 10 different materials from January 15, 2018. Ban on use of plastics is already in place in the district.

The different materials banned in the district come with foil coated paper plates, styrofoam/thermocol plates and cups/free thermocol/cutouts, PP (non-woven ) carry luggage/ packing luggage / bedsheets / chefs hats/ caps/ and bedsheets, plastic cloves, water packets, silver foil covers, plastic buntings, plastic and foil reward wrap, laminated brown paper, laminated bakery packing containers, besides cling wrap and water bottle below one litre.

A meeting used to be convened just lately on this connection by means of the district management comprising all the stake-holders. The determination used to be taken by means of the district management after maintaining a lengthy discussion with buyers.


However, plastic carry luggage, plates and cups are banned in the Nilgiris since 2001. But the ban has been best in papers for the past few years. Nilgiris collector J Innocent Divya has re-enforced the ban in a strict manner of late.


President of the Nilgiris District Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu R Parameswaran advised TOI, "We (the traders) had a lengthy debate during the recent meeting convened by the district administration. Finally, we accepted the decision taken by the administration."


He said, "Later, we traders held a meeting ourselves and decided to cooperate with the administration in the interest of the hill district."
