BHUBANESWAR: Odisha government on Thursday wrote to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to believe the call for of third genders to offer 5% reservation in elections. The third gender group has been demanding 5% electoral reservation in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, state assembly and urban-local frame elections.
"It is requested to kindly consider the aforesaid demands of the Third Gender Surakshya Trust in the lights of the guidelines/rules formulated by the Election Commission of India," learn the letter from state joint leader election commissioner, Bhabani Prasad Ray to ECI.
Odisha is the first state to make suggestions for reservation for third genders to the ECI. The ECI had given recognition to the third genders beneath "other" category in 2009 on poll bureaucracy. In 2014 the Supreme Court of India gave them formal recognition as third genders and asked governments to believe them as socially and economically backward.
"Like other minority groups, third genders have been deprived of their rights and face severe discrimination, are tortured and treated badly in the society.
