Protest for jobs, rehabilitation hits MCL coal mining

ANGUL:Coal production and transportation in Bhubaneswari, Ananta and Jagannath coal mines below Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) have been disrupted on Thursday owing to protest by way of the affected other people demanding jobs, repayment and rehabilitation. "Hiloi villagers below Talcher Colliery police station, passed over their land and other holdings to the MCL within the hope of getting jobs within the PSU.


But we have now now not got justice even 9 years after acquisition of their land and pro- perties," said an agitator. About 167 families have been affected owing to the projects and MCL had got 721acres.


The MCL authorities had promised jobs to every of the affected families, said an respectable source. The villagers, who gave away their land, have been assured jobs within the venture prior to December 15 this year, said the source. The protesters close down the 3 coal mines on Thursday.


Due to the agitation, coal production and transportation came to a standstill and MCL incurred losses amounting to crores of rupees. The villagers have threatened to release an indefinite strike until their calls for are fulfilled. M Brahmapurkar, chief general manager, Jaganath Area, instructed TOI, "We will provide them jobs and compensate them according to rehabilitation and resettlement policy, 2006, of the state government soon. As they are asking for jobs before getting rehabilitation we need support from the government. We will convene a high-level meeting soon with the district administration and look into the demands."
