BEIRUT: Syrian regime forces complex in opposition to jihadists on Saturday on the edge of the northwestern province of Idlib, the last outside government keep watch over, a monitor and the state news company said.
Government and allied forces subsidized via Russian warplanes have since Monday been combating mostly jihadist fighters in an area straddling the border between Idlib and Hama provinces.
The combating, which could signal the beginning of a major offensive to grasp Idlib province from rebels dominated via a former al-Qaida associate, escalated on Thursday.
On Saturday, regime troops complex, seizing a number of villages and surrounding spaces, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based battle monitor, said.
State news company SANA said regime forces had taken keep watch over of five villages, spaces and "strategic hills" within the northeast of Hama province.
An AFP correspondent said civilians persisted to flee spaces near the battle zone, heading north towards the provincial capital of Idlib with their belongings piled top on pick-up trucks.
Since Thursday, the clashes have killed 32 soldiers and allied individuals of paramilitary gadgets, as well as 29 rebels from Islamist teams or from former al-Qaida associate Fateh al-Sham, the Observatory said.
Twenty-one civilians have also died.
Government forces' first goal to take keep watch over of the southeast of Idlib province, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.
This would allow the regime to have complete keep watch over of a highway that links the capital Damascus to the government-held 2nd city of Aleppo.
