Fourth accused held in tiger skin seizure case in Karnataka

Udhagamandalam: A different group of Sathyamangalam wooded area officers on Saturday arrested the fourth accused in connection with last week's seizure of a tiger pores and skin in Karnataka.
The officers mentioned the accused, Siddappa, a resident of Thiaganarai village in Thalavadi taluk in Sathyamangalam, was once the primary accused and he had promised to present the other 3, who were arrested at Yeshwantpura with the skin, Rs 5 lakh for tiger pores and skin and frame parts.

During questioning, Siddappa told the officers that the skin did not belong to a tigress from Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR), as claimed via the other 3 accused who were in the custody of Yeshwantpura wooded area officers.

"The poached tiger is allegedly not from STR," mentioned C H Padma, deputy director of STR. "We have registered a new case here in connection with the Bengaluru case. A thorough investigation is underway," she added.

On January 22, the Karnataka police arrested Balakrishna, 28, Mahesh, 23 and Rangaraj, 36 for illegally possessing a tiger pores and skin. They were from the similar village as Siddappa. The police filed an FIR wherein the cost of the skin was once estimated as Rs 15 lakh.

Later the three were passed over to Yeshwantpura wooded area officers. They filed a case below the quite a lot of sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. During inquiry, the accused told the officers that the skin was once removed from a tigress poached in STR.

I Anwardeen, field director of STR mentioned, "We examined the carcass at the field. Bones were sent for further analysis as part of the standard examinations. Only after receiving the reports we could conclude anything."


In a identical case, Karnataka wooded area officers had seized tiger bones and claws in 2015 and arrested a resident of a village near Mettupalayam. After 3 weeks of the incident, Sathyamangalam wooded area officers arrested two extra other people concerned in the case. The officers seized 17 tiger claws from one of the arrested. The case remains to be pending in a court.
