KORAPUT: The Nabarangpur District Consumer Disputes and Redress Forum has fined a physician of the district Rs 20 lakh for fallacious management of anaesthesia to a girl who underwent a caesarean operation in 2010.
The forum, in a recent order, requested the doctor - Santosh Nag of Christian Hospital in Nabarangpur town - to pay the high quality to Sabina Rehman Khan, a resident of Taragaon in the district, within January 19.
In her criticism, Sabina said during a routine check-up at Christian Hospital, the doctor suggested her to get admitted for a caesarean delivery. "Nag administered her spinal anaesthesia at least seven times, leading to a paralysis of her lower body," the criticism reads. "She gave birth to a boy and was later examined at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam where she underwent three operations on her spinal cord. The doctor in Visakhapatam said my lower body had been affected by the overdose of anaesthesia," she said.
Sabina now hang a incapacity certificates which says she is 75 according to cent disabled. She is confined to a wheelchair. "I paid Rs 19,000 for the caesarean operation. My condition today has been caused by the doctor concerned and hence I approached the consumer forum for justice," she said.
'Doctor was once now not a expert'
She filed the petition prior to the consumer forum in 2013. After analyzing the case, verifying documents and recording statements, the forum discovered the doctor accountable and imposed the high quality. "During examination of the case, it was found that the doctor was not a specialist in anaesthesia. He had only done a shortterm course in the subject. Hence, negligence on his part was established," said Gopal Krushna Rath, forum president.The accused doctor said he was once innocent. "There was no negligence on my part or by the hospital authorities during the operation. I will challenge the verdict in the state consumer forum," he said.
