Pakistan to send transgenders as Haj volunteers

ISLAMABAD: For the first time in the history of Pakistan, transgenders will probably be a part of a crew of boy scouts being sent to Saudi Arabia to serve as volunteers right through 2018 Haj pilgrimage, a media file said lately.
"Efforts for sending transgender youth to Saudi Arabia to serve as Khuddamul Hujjaj (volunteers during the annual Haj) are underway," IPC Sindh Boys Scouts Commissioner Atif Amin Husain was once quoted as announcing by means of the Express Tribune.

Blue Veins, a transgender welfare organisation, is coordinating with the IPC at the subject, the paper said.

"At least two to three transgender persons will be selected from each of the remaining three provinces for joining the scouting community that leaves for Saudi Arabia every year.," Husain said.

He said recently 40 transgender formative years from Sindh have been administered oath on joining the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association (PBSA) a countrywide scouting organisation and one of the crucial greatest volunteer forces in the nation.

The transgender persons can be a part of a crew of more than 150 boy scouts, he said, including that final 12 months over a hundred boy scouts had been sent.

"The recruitment process for Khuddamul Hujjaj includes physical training and a test. After that, the PBSA sends a list of successful candidates to the Federal Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony for a final approval," Husain said, explaining the method.

This 12 months the list would come with names of transgender formative years, he added.

Husain feels that by means of joining the PBSA, transgender formative years would get social acceptance, attain self belief, really feel safe and move forward, the paper said.

Blue Veins Programme Coordinator Qamar Naseem said that once the recruitment of 40 transgenders in Sindh, his organisation is planning recruitment processes in Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

"This can be a game changer and can significantly improve the social acceptance of transgender youth in our society," he said.

He termed the recruitment step a good initiative that may lend a hand the transgender community in improving its image at native as well as regional level.
