JORHAT: Over 1.6 lakh teachers from greater than 60,000 primary faculties across the state observed a 'Black Day' on Thursday in protest towards the assault on a trainer in higher Assam's Charaideo district allegedly on the orders of the deputy commissioner final Saturday for a fifteen-minute extend in attending a gathering.
Ajit Dev, the headmaster of Panbari Lower Primary School, used to be physically assaulted by means of private security officials of Charaideo deputy commissioner Bibekananda Phukan on February 17. Dev used to be also reportedly detained by means of police at Sonari police station for 12 hours and later released on bail for a similar reason why.
When contacted, deputy commissioner (Charaideo) Bibekananda Phukan mentioned, "The teacher had entered the meeting room in a very unstable manner. Believing him to be drunk, I asked him to be taken away, and accordingly he was kept at Sonari police station for a few hours. Later I came to know that he was not drunk and he is a man of some abnormal behaviours."
On Thursday, thousands of teachers beneath the aegis of Asom Raijyik Prathamik Sikshak Sanmilani (ARPSS) demanded that the DC be punished, issuing a 72-hour ultimatum. The teachers' body had also gone on a strike on Wednesday with the same call for. Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered a probe into the alleged incident. "The education minister has ordered an inquiry on the February 17 incident. We demand the government punish the DC within the next 72 hours. We have also decided to stage dharnas in all the district headquarters and subdivisions on February 26 if our demands are not addressed," mentioned ARPSS secretary Ratul Goswami.
