Mysuru: In appointing ladies to some of the senior most positions within the state paperwork, chief minister Siddaramaiah has given a push to women empowerment, said sugar minister Mohan Kumari right here on Thursday.
Kumari, who inaugurated the two-day national conference on ‘Women Empowerment and Rural Development’ organised by the Institute of Development Studies, University of Mysore at the Rani Bahadur Auditorium, pointed out that each the Karnataka chief secretary (CS Ratna Prabha) and the director general of police (DGP) (Neelamani Raju) were ladies.
“Providing high quality education for women is the need of the hour since instructing them means instructing the entire circle of relatives. It also plays a key role in empowering ladies,” she said.
Lamenting the demise of just about 3 lakh pregnant ladies around the globe all the way through pregnancy, Kumari said, “To steer clear of such incidents, the state executive has deployed Asha workers in all districts. These workers also paintings to empower ladies in rural areas.”
Pointing to the superiority of male domination in Indian villages, she added, “Women are sidelined whilst essential choices affecting the country are taken. In the rural areas, ladies have been changed into baby generating machines, and they are denied even elementary rights. The state executive has carried out many programmes to empower rural ladies and is working to convey them into the mainstream.”
Director of the Abdul Nazir Sab Institute of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj D Pranesh Rao bemoaned the failure to enforce the many programmes and rules enacted to empower ladies. “The executive has launched 264 schemes, and 84 legislations have been handed to empower ladies, however it's in imposing them that we have got failed,” he said.
However, Rao said that girls had made inroads within the political sphere in Karnataka. “Women head 19 of the 30 zilla panchayats, and in taluk panchayat, 52% of the elected members are ladies,” he said.
Book launched
Kumari and UoM in-charge vice-chancellor Prf. C Basavaraju on Thursday launched the number of scholarly articles submitted for the conference. Nearly 100 scholars from neighbouring states have registered for the two-day conference. Former directors of IDS were feted on the occasion.
UoM, Registrar D Bharathi, Register Evaluation Professor J Somashekar, IDS, Director Professor H Nagaraj, syndicate member Shruthi Tharun Giri and different members were provide.
