SAI refutes Anju, AFI claims of preferential treatment to ISL

NEW DELHI: The Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Tuesday vehemently denied Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and national sports observer (Track & box) Anju Bobby George's allegation of the AFI being denied permission to host Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships. She had alleged that SAI had locked up stadia in various towns for the cash-rich Indian Super League (ISL).

Sandeep Pradhan, Dy. Director General SAI, has categorically clarified that the national sports body didn't receive any requests seeking permissions for such occasions from AFI, in particular for the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi. The other two stadiums mentioned via Anju - Kanteerava Stadium (Bengaluru) and JLN Stadium (Chennai) - come under the purview of respective state governments.

"SAI is having it control on JN Stadium, Delhi whereas the other 2 stadiums i.e. Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru and JLN Stadium, Chennai are under the administrative control by other state authorities," SAI stated in a statement. "As per our records AFI has not submitted any proposal for organising Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championship during March 2018 at JN Stadium, New Delhi."

The statement further made clear that SAI had not denied permission to AFI to host some other occasions during 2017-18. During this era AFI had asked permission to organise three occasions and was once given the go-ahead for each and every of them.

As in line with SAI, AFI had already determined upon the venue and date for the Federation Cup Athletics (March 5-8), the information of which was once uploaded on their web site in October closing year.

SAI also pushed aside the allegations claiming the security of athletes was once compromised via organising box occasions in practice space. "It has also been alleged that AFI has been forced to organize field events at practice area which pose a threat to the safety of athletes. In this connection, it is clarified that SAI takes all safety measures whenever athletics events are held in SAI stadia."

Anju, the lone Indian observe and box athlete to win a World Championships medal, had earlier stated that stadia meant for observe and box in New Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai were rendered out of bounds for the athletes for competition as well as for training because of ISL.
