Sardar statue garlanded with bottles in Gandhinagar village

AHMEDABAD: The streak of vandalism hitting statues in some portions of the country has touched Gujarat. A statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first deputy Prime Minister of India, was once garlanded with empty soft-drink bottles at a library in Shertha village of Gandhinagar on Wednesday. The statue had been unveiled by way of former deputy PM and BJP veteran L Ok Advani in October, 1992 — two months prior to the demolition of Babri Mosque in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh. Adalaj police have registered an FIR and feature initiated an investigation.

According to police, some villagers noticed the garland on the statue and pictures taken therefore went viral. The villagers later got rid of the garland and washed the statue. The manager of the library, Hasmukh Patel, approached Adalaj police station and filed a criticism.


Adalaj police inspector J G Vaghela, mentioned: “We have sought CCTV footage from a financial institution which is in front of the library to spot the persons involved on this case.” Two home guard jawans and a police constable had been stationed near the statue, Vaghela mentioned.


Mayank Chavda, DIG, Gandhinagar range, mentioned that the subject has been taken seriously and the accused persons shall be booked in a while. Vandalism of statues began in Tripura after Lenin’s statue was once introduced following the BJP’s victory within the state. Then two statues of Ambedkar had been defiled in Uttar Pradesh. A statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founding father of Jan Sangh; and probably the most first Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru had been vandalized. Two statues of Tamil Nadu reformer Periyar Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar, had been vandalized in Tamil Nadu.
